Horizons Regional Council will be supporting planting along the Kahuterawa Stream at Camp Kilsby on Saturday 22 August and Sunday 23 August.
Horizons freshwater coordinator Lucy Ferguson says it’s encouraging to see the community getting involved in planting.
“It all started with a local landowner expressing interest in riparian planting along the banks of the Kahuterawa Stream that flows through his property, however suitable land ready to plant this winter was identified on neighbouring land, which belonged to the Scouts,
We contacted the Scouts and they were keen to be involved in the planting day and allow the use of the land.”
“It has been a real collaborative effort; with the farmer putting up the fence; Green Corridors providing the plants, which have been eco-sourced from the Kahuterawa Catchment; and the Scouts and community providing the labour to get the plants in the ground.”
“The Kahuterawa Stream is a habitat for many native fish, including the banded kokopu, short jaw kokopu, koaro, long fin and short fin eels, torrent fish, common bully, lamprey and red-finned bully. As well as brown trout.
Planting along these streams will improve the state of this habitat for these fish and help support the Lower Kahuterawa Biodiversity Project.”
The Lower Kahuterawa Biodiversity Project is a partnership between Horizons Regional Council, Massey University, the New Zealand Defence Force and the C.T. Keeble Memorial Forest Trust to maintain and enhance the biodiversity values of the Kahuterawa Stream.
If any member of the public would like to be involved, planting will begin at 10 am on both days. To get to Camp Kilsby planting site, go through the gate at the end of Hewitts Road and follow the gravel road straight ahead and the Kahuterawa Stream is on the left.
